HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is an extension of the HTTP protocol that uses encryption to provide secure communication over a computer network. It works by layering the HTTP protocol over the TLS (Transport Layer Security) or SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol, which encrypts data packets to ensure that information exchanged between a web browser and a server remains private and tamper-proof. By using digital certificates, HTTPS also authenticates the identity of the website, protecting users from attackers trying to intercept sensitive data like login credentials or payment details.
